Uno de los defectos que más persistentemente se han achacado a Ovidio es su aparente insensibilidad ante el dolor y el sufrimiento de las víctimas, que le lleva incluso a aprovechar este tipo de situaciones para desplegar un virtuosismo extem-poráneo. Ejemplo paradigmático constituiría el episodio de Procne y Filomela en las Metamorfosis. Pero la aparente complacencia en la crueldad y lo sangriento no es aquí gratuita, sino que simboliza en el nivel expresivo una de las ideas clave que se detectan en el plano del contenido: la existencia de una justicia retributiva que permite un castigo proporcional del agresor, por desesperada que sea la situación de sus víctimas. = One of the defects most persistently attributed to Ovid is his apparent insen-sitivity to the pain and suffering of the victims, which even leads him -always according to his detractors- to take advantage of this type of situation in order to display a'wit out of season', to employ J. Dryden's formula. The episode in the Meta-morphoses involving Procne and Philomela would constitute a paradigmatic example. But the apparent complacency towards bloody cruelty is not gratuitous here; rather it symbolizes on the expressive level one of the key notions that can be detected in the plot: the existence of a retributive justice that allows for a punish-ment proportionate to the aggression, however desperate the situation of his victims might be.
