    El principal de los trabajos de V.S. Naipaul a The enigma of arrival ha expresado alejamiento y desaliento hacia su patria, Trinidad. Sin embargo, en dicha obra, Naipaul examina los orígenes de sus otros trabajos y las implicaciones de los viajes en los que él se ha embarcado para la construcción de esta novela. Su anhelo por sus raíces y el orden todavía se manifiesta.     V.S. Naipaul¿s works prior to The Enigma of Arrival have expressed both estrangement and despondency towards his homeland, Trinidad. However, in The Enigma of Arrival, Naipaul examines the origins of his other works and the implications of the journeys that he has embarked upon prior to this novel. His longing for rootedness and order still manifests itself. However, his focus is now postcolonial in nature and this allows for a new thrust in his thinking and concerns. This mindset now allows him to explore the idea of self in a different light that brings the realization that assimilation in a new place is just a part of the process of arrival. The other part lies in remembering his roots and accepting this aspect of himself as the reality that he has been seeking for so long. In other words, his sense of self lies within rather than without.
