Anton Cañellas s'implicà, ja des de ben jove, en la defensa de la llibertat i la democràcia, treballant per Catalunya des del convenciment per una idea forta d'Europa, la mateixa que somiaven Schuman, De Gasperi o Adenauer. Des del final deis anys quaranta, la militància a Unió Democràtica li per meté treballar i lluitar en favor de les seves idees, que va intentar exportar arreu tot participant activament en la gènesi dels moviments democratacristians estatais i europeus. Compromès a fons amb la defensa dels drets humans, incloent-hi contribucions potser poc conegudes en la redacció de la Constitució, dedicà tota la seva vida als ideals catalanista i europeista i va esdevenir un català reconegut internacionalment, un politic respectat i admirat, un lluitador incansable per una Europa unida i edificada sobre els valors de la solidaritat, la fraternitat i l'humanisme

From an early age, Anton Cañellas was committed to defending freedom and democracy, working for Catalonia through the conviction of a strong idea of Europe, the same one that Schuman, De Gasperi or Adenauer had dreamt of. Since the end of the forties, his militancy in the Democratic Union has allowed him to work and fight for his ideas, which he tried to export all over by participating actively in the genesis of State and European Christian Democrat movements. Deeply committed to the defence of human rights, including hitherto unknown contributions to the drafting of the Constitution, he dedicated his whole life to pro-Catalan and European ideals, becoming an internationally known Catalan, a respected and admired politician, an untiring fighter for a united Europe constructed on the values of solidarity, fraternity and humanism.
