    Cuando México consumó su independencia los novohispanos no tenían sino dos beatos, el bien conocido Felipe de Jesús, quien fue canonizado en 1862, y el hasta hoy todavía beato Sebastián de Aparicio. Aquí tratamos del segundo, retomando su historia a partir de los testimonios de sus contemporáneos, reunidos a principios del siglo XVII por los comisarios eclesiásticos que investigaron su caso para conseguir su beatificación en Roma. Estos documentos, elaborados a raíz de una orden pontifical y que se conservan en los acervos del Archivo Secreto Vaticano, dibujan el rostro de un "santo" popular típicamente mediterráneo, cuyo éxito en Puebla y sus alrededores prueba el arraigo, en estas tierras de colonización española, de una "cristiandad vivida" poco conocida. Este caso permite profundizar tanto en el conocimiento de la formación del catolicismo novo-hispano como en el estudio del catolicismo popular europeo.

    At the end of the war for its independence, Mexico had only two Beatified personalities: the famed Felipe de Jesús, canonised in 1862, and the yet-to-be-sanctified Sebastián de Aparicio. This article is about the history of the latter one, based on the testimony of people who got to know him. The information gathered by the ecclesiastic commissioners in the early 17th century was an attempt to collect evidence for his beatification in Rome. The documents, elaborated under a pontifical order and still kept in the Secret Records of the Vatican, display the essence of a popular, typically Mediterranean, "Saint", whose success in the city of Puebla and its surroundings confirms a "practising Christianity" in the Spanish colonies not quite often observed so far. This very case allows us to go deeper into the knowledge of both the formation of the Catholicism in New Spain and the study of the European popular Catholicism.
