This article calls attention to one of the harsh sides of missionary work : the disturbing venture to adapt concepts of the old world to a new reality. The author, based on missionary correspondence, geographic and historical relations, as well as other documents, shows how idealism, the mystical ardent desire of suffering and the following of Christ example were not always sufficient to overcome the hard and rough life among indians.
