  • Resumen
    • This article through the study of the Dominican nuns that lived in the convent of Catalina de Siena¿ explores the destiny of the religious orders throughout the nineteenth century. It begins with an analysis of the problems these communities encountered during the first half of the nineteenth century, such as the lack of economic resources, but above all it studies the impact anticlerical legislation had upon them. Thus, the laws that directly affected female communities are explored taking into account the factors that impinged upon their livelihood, as well as those that had an impact on monastic life, which ultimately led to the suppression of religious orders. Finally, it explores the subsequent secular period, characterized by the efforts of the nuns to preserve their community life and their attempts to recover their order.
