La canónica de la Catedral de León: respuestas góticas a una estructura eclesiástica secular

    Tras el abandono de la vida comunitaria por el clero catedralicio leonés, la construcción de una nueva catedral y la preexistencia de estructuras arquitectónicas claustrales previas llevaron a una original conformación del nuevo claustro catedralicio, planteado como sustitución de un edificio previo tardorrománico. Debido a los problemas que conllevaba dicha sustitución, la canónica leonesa se edificó en la galería norte del claustro, aunando en su estructura la sala capitular y, probablemente, el viejo refectorio del cabildo, a los que se añadiría la tardía capilla de San Nicolás. El claustro leonés se convirtió en un escenario perfecto para el ceremonial litúrgico procesional de la catedral.

    After the abandonment of the common life by the chapter of the Cathedral of León, the building of a new cathedral and the preexistence of previous architectonic structures took to an original conformation of new cathedral cloister, raised like substitution of a previous Late Romanesque building. Due to the problems that entailed this substitution, the canonry of the Cathedral of Leon was built in the North gallery of the cloister, combining in its structure the Chapter-house and, probably, their old refectory. During the 14th Century it was added the chapel of San Nicholas. The Cloister of the Cathedral of León became a perfect scene for the liturgical ceremonies of the cathedral.
