Nuevo tratamiento mediante crioterapia de la invasión sublamelar epitelial tras lasik

    • Objective: To know whether sublamellar epithelial ingrowth after lasik disappears or not by application of freezing temperature over the cornea in the area of the epithelial invasion.

      Design: Noncomparative consecutive case series Participants: Two rabbits with voluntarily provoked intracorneal epithelial ingrowth, and 3 patients with accidental postlasik sublamellar epithelial invasion.

      Method: A retinal cryoprobe was applied onto the cornea for about 5-6 seconds in the rabbits and 2-3 seconds in the human patients provoking a freezing of the epithelial ingrowth of aproximately ¿75ºC.

      Results: At the examination 1 month after the cryoapplication the epithelial ingrowth has disappeared in the two rabbits and in two patients. In the third patient the invasor epithelium involutioned to two small pearls.

      Conclusion: The cryotherapy of the cornea at the area of the epithelial ingrowth is a non invasive, non aggressive and efficacious method to destroy the epithelial ingrowth which accidentally appeared under the flap after lasik.
