Resumen de Pacientes oftalmológicos en la isla del Hierro

  Objetivo: Se valorará, en primer lugar, la distribución de la patología oftálmica en la isla de El Hierro, y en segundo lugar, las causas que con mayor frecuencia motivaron el traslado de pacientes a hospitales de referencia.

  Material y método: El primer estudio abarca todos los pacientes que acudieron al Hospital Nuestra Señora de los Reyes solicitando atención oftalmológica durante 4 meses (desde el 1 de Febrero al 31 de Mayo de 1997, ambos inclusive). En el segundo estudio se incluyeron todos los desplazamientos que se realizaron por prescripción oftalmológica desde la isla del Hierro a Tenerife a lo largo de todo el año 1997.

  Resultados: Se atendieron un total de 322 pacientes, cuya edad media fue de 46,5 años (DE = 19,6). La agudeza visual media fue de 0,55. Del total de pacientes sólo 5 tuvieron presiones intraoculares mayores de 20 mmHg. Entre los motivos más frecuentes de consulta está en primer lugar el acudir a su revisión oftálmica periódica, seguido, en segundo lugar, de problemas refractivos, y en orden decreciente: disminución de agudeza visual, ojo rojo y cefaleas. En cuanto a los diagnósticos finales los más usuales fueron: ametropías, exploración dentro de la normalidad, cataratas, infecciones conjuntivales, degeneración macular asociada a la edad y glaucoma. A pesar de la dotación del Servicio de Oftalmología se trasladaron a 107 pacientes, lo que supone el 6,5 %, en el período que va desde el 10 de Enero de 1997 hasta el 10 de Enero de 1998. Los motivos más reiterados de traslado fueron tanto de tipo terapéutico (someterse a intervención quirúrgica o a una sesión de láser) como diagnóstico (angiofluoresceingrafía y campo visual).

  Conclusiones: El 39,1 % de los pacientes acudieron para revisión periódica sin síntomas oculares , pero sólo encontramos dentro de la normalidad al 15,5 %. Por tanto un 25 % de supuestos sanos se les diagnosticó alguna afección oftálmica de diversa naturaleza.

  Purpose: Firstly, to appraise the distribution of the ophthalmological pathology on El Hierro island and secondly to assess the most frequent reasons why patients were sent to a tertiary hospital.

  Material and Method: The first study takes in all the patients who went to the Nuestra Señora de los Reyes Hospital seeking ophthalmological attention in the four months between the 1st February and 31st May 1997. The second study includes all the patients who , under medical prescription, were moved to Tenerife throughout 1997.

  Results: 322 patients, whose average age was 46.5 (DE = 19.6) were seen . The average visual accuracy was 0.55. Of all the patients, only 5 had a intraocular pressure greater then 20 mmHg. The most frequent cause of consultation was the periodic ophthalmic check-up followed by refractive problems, lessening of visual accuracy, red eye and headaches. As to the final diagnosis, the most common were ametropía, test within normal limits, conjunctival infections, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. In spite of the facilities of the ophthalmology service, 107 patients were sent for treatment to Tenerife in the period from 10-January-97 to 10-January-98 . The most frequent reasons for the move were for both therapeutic reasons (to undergo surgery or to receive an argon laser session) and diagnostic (to have an angiofluoresceingraphy and visual field test).

  Conclusions: 39.1 % of the patients were attending a periodic check-up without having ocular symptoms yet we found that only 15.5 % were within the normal limits. Therefore, 25 % of supposeoly healthy patients were diagnosed some ophthalmic complaint of a diverse nature.
