Originally inspired by the United States Constitution with adaptations to take into account local considerations, the colombian system of government is characterised by the wide-ranging powers held by the President of the Republic. The current constitution, drawn up in 1991, reaffirms the central role of the head of state whilst defining his powers and extends the powers of the Congress. Colombia's Constitution draws elements from several different constitutional models to produce a unique political system that combines elements of a presidential regime and a parliamentary regime.

À l'origine plus ou moins inspiré par la Constitution des États-Unis mais aussi tributaire de considérations locales le régime institutionnel colombien se caractérise par une hypertrophie des pouvoirs du Président de la République. La Constitution de 1991, actuellement en vigueur, réaffirme le rôle central du Chef de l'État tout en encadrant ses attributions et revalorise les pouvoirs du Congrès. Pour y parvenir le constituant a réalisé une combinaison entre les différents modèles constitutionnels et tend à faire émerger un système politique sui generis associant des éléments du régime présidentiel et du régime parlementaire
