La Tomografía de Emisión de Positrones (PET) está demostrando ser una prueba con una sensibilidad y especificidad mayores que TC y RM para el diagnóstico del cáncer de cabeza y cuello. Actualmente no existe consenso en cuanto a las indicaciones de esta costosa prueba en Cirugía Maxilofacial. En el siguiente trabajo se hace una revisión bibliográfica sobre el tema y se discuten las indicaciones de la prueba en el área maxilofacial.

The positron emission tomography with 18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose is a better tool than computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for the diagnosis of head and neck cáncer. Nowadays, there is no consensus regarding the indications of this expensive test in Maxilofacial surgery. In the next report we will make a summary of bibliography about the issue.
