Es Darío el poeta bisagra de la poesía de entresiglos, pero es sobre todo el poeta del siglo XX, el que abre las puertas de la tradición para renovarla y ofrece los nuevos caminos a seguir por los vates de entreguerras con poemarios como El canto errante. Es también el nicaragüense el poeta más editado del mismo siglo, interés comercial que surgió tras su muerte, como demuestran todos los intentos de publicaciones de «obras completas» a partir de 1917. Ahora debe ser el siglo XXI el del Darío prosista.

Darío is the key poet of the changing of the centuries, but he is above all the poet of the twentieth century who opens the gates of tradition so as to renew it and in books such as El canto errante paves the way to be followed by poets between the wars. The Nicaraguan is also the most widely published poet of the twentieth century. The commercial interest in his literature arose after his death, as can be seen by the different attempts to publish his «complete works» after 1917. The twenty-first century must be that of Darío as a writer of prose.
