  • Resumen
    • This paper shows the evidence of the quantitative importance of indigenous tribute on the Philippine Islands during the 18th century compared to what happened in other colonial areas where it was less relevant to the imperial financing. In that respect, the paper analyses the structure of the tribute at three significant moments (1697, 1739, and 1794) and its evolution throughout the century, stimulated by the Bourbon reforms. The research concludes pointing out that this tax on the indigenous economy was the biggest fiscal income on the islands until the establishment of the tobacco monopoly at the end of the century. In that sense, it opened the way to a slow transformation that led to a market economy and, together with the other three monopolies, ensured the maintenance of the 19th century Philippine Treasure.
