    ALFREDO da Silva (1871-1942) marcou muito profundamente a história do desenvolvimento industrial portugués na primeira metade do século XX. A sua actividade desenvolveu-se durante meio século (1890-1942) no sector, até entâo descurado, da implantaçâo de uma produçâo industrial diversificada a pesar de coherente. Estes longos anos de trabalho obstinado, descritos minuciosamente neste artigo, foram também aqueles em que Portugal conheceu numerosas transformaçôes: agonia do poder monárquico, difícil instalaçâo da República, primeira e segunda Guerra Mundial, ditaduras de Sidónio Pais, e em seguida de Salazar. Todos estes acontecimentos nâo impediram que Alfredo da Silva construisse, com a CUF (Compañía Uniâo Fabril), pedra angular das suas actividades, um imperio industrial tâo vasto quanto diversificado e que lhe valeu ser denominado "o primeiro grande industrial português".

    ALFREDO da Silva (1871-1942) left his mark on the history of Portuguese industrial development during the first half of the 20th century. Throughout this period (1890-1942) he worked tirelessly in the previously neglected field of diversified abut coherent industrial production. These long years of strenuous effort are described in detail in this article. They are also the years in which Portugal went through a number of upheavals; the decline and all of the monarchy; the establishment, fraught with difficulties, of the Republic; two world wars; the dictatorship of Sidónio Pais, then that of Salazar. These events did not prevent Alfredo da Silva from setting up a vast and varied industrial empire based on CUF (Companhia Uniâo Fabril). For all these reasons Alfredo da Silva has been called "the first great industrialist of Portugal".

    ALFREDO da Silva (1871-1942) a très profondément marqué l'histoire du développement industriel portugais dans la première moitié du XX[e] siècle. Son activité s'est déployée tout au long d'un demi-siècle (1890-1942) dans le secteur, jusque là négligé, de l'implantation d'une production industrielle diversifiée et cependant cohérente. Ces longues années de travail opiniâtre, décrites dans cet article par le menu, ont été également celles òu le Portugal a connu de nombreux bouleversements : agonie du pouvoir monarchique, difficile installation de la République, Première et Seconde Guerre mondiale, dictatures de SidÓnio Pais, puis de Salazar. Tous ces événements n'ont pas empêché Alfredo da Silva de constituer, avec la CUF (Companhia Uniâo Fabril) comme pierre angulaire de ses activités, un empire industriel aussi vaste que diversifié, ce qui lui a valu d'être appelé " le premier grand industriel portugais ".
