    On the morality of nationalism and self-determination (Thougts of a puzzled catholic from Galicia examining his nationalism) [ANTONIO-CARLOS PEREIRA MENAUT] Many Spaniards, Catholics and non-Catholics, seem to opine that nationalism and self-determination are ultimately not very moral attitudes, beyond what the positive legislation tells us (which in Spain is not very favourable in this regard). They believe that these phenomena bear the seeds of violence and lack of solidarity. They talk as if political nationalism and self-determination were at odds with Christian morals and natural law. This is the subject matter of this article by Antonio-Carlos Pereira Menaut, Professor «Jean Monnet» of Constitutional Law of the European Law at the School of Law of the University of Santiago de Compostela, proposes the debate of such a widespread attitude. According to the author, many Catholics in Spain believe that political nationalism, self-determination and unilateral secession are not really things which a Christian should defend for reasons that go beyond what is permitted by the laws and the Constitution: the belief is that they generate violence and, moreover that there is no unilateral law which justifies abandoning the Spanish State. It is true that to a certain extent it is as if it were a discussion among Catholics, but since there are few underlying arguments, the debate will also interest anyone concerned about these issues.

    Sobre la moralitat del nacionalisme i l'autodeterminació (Reflexions d'un catòlic perplex i gallec que examina el seu nacionalisme) [ANTONIO-CARLOS PEREIRA MENAUT] Sembla que molts espanyols, catòlics i no catòlics, opinen que, en el fons, el nacionalisme i l'autodeterminació no són postures gaire morals, més enllà del que en digui la legislació positiva (que a Espanya tampoc no és, per cert, gaire favorable en aquest sentit). Creuen que aquests fenòmens duen la llavor de la violência i de la insolidaritat. Parlen com si el nacionalisme politic i l'autodeterminaciò, en el fons, no anessin en la línia de la moral cristiana i el dret natural. A partir d'aquí, l'objectiu d'aquest article d'Antonio-Carlos Pereira Menaut, Catedràtic «Jean Monnet» de Dret Constitucional de la Unió Europea a la Facultat de Dret de la Universitat de Santiago de Compostel.la, és debatre aquesta postura tan difosa. Segons l'autor, sòn molts els catòlics a Espanya que creuen que, en el fons, el nacionalisme politic, l'autodeterminació i la secessió unilateral sòn coses que un cristià no hauria de defensar per raons que van més enllà del que permeten o prohibeixen les lleis i la Constituciò: la creença és que generen violència i, a més, que no existeix un dret unilateral que justifiqui abandonar l'Estat espanyol. Certament, i fins a cert punt, és com si fos una discussiò entre catòlics, però com que els arguments de fons no sòn gaires, el debat resulta interessant també per a qualsevol persona inquieta per aquests temes.
