The first archaeological dig at this medieval castle focussed on examining the problems of the emerging structures and the features of the archaeological deposit with the view to planning strategies for future action. This military edifice, representing one of the most advanced border constructions of the Navarre kingdom in Gipuzkoan territory, is a typical Early Medieval fort, simple but effective. Situated on a sharp outcrop which affords extensive views of the territory below, there are two superimposed and concentric enclosures, of small surface area and with an irregular boundary, apparently polygonal in intended design, but adjusting to the characteristics of the terrain.
Despite the general degradation of the building structures and of the various recorded repairs carried out, the upper or noble enclosure still has the remains of the main or tribute tower. The excavation work carried out partially affected the northern area of the enclosure and pointed to an active period of rebuilding during the final phase of occupation of the fort. However, it is still premature to decide if the archaeological evidence corresponds to the recorded data suggesting an abandonment of the site from the period of the conflicts of 1335.
