Biodiversity, an example of the planet's health [JOANDOMÈNEC ROS] Biodiversity is in peril. This is one of the blunt findings that the ecologist and professor of the University of Barcelona, Dr. Joandomènec Ros, shows us in the course of his article, biodiversity, a measure of the planet's health. In professor Ros' opinion, it is sadly ironic that the knowledge we are beginning to have of the biodiversity of the planet and its important role in the way the world works, and in our own questions, comes at a time in history when our species is damaging this biodiversity on all possible fronts: destroying habitats (especially the tropical jungles, although neither are forest and wet and seaboard areas all over the world free from danger), directly eliminating the more fragile species while fostering others (pets, plagues, weeds), contaminating our environment, exhausting what to us are natural resources but which to the ecosystems are critical pieces in the way they work. We are indiscriminately tearing out whole pages of the dictionary of the simile before we even take the trouble to find out what they contain. And this all comes at a time in history when mankind is finding it really difficult to feed almost two thirds of its growing population, to say nothing of guaranteeing a minimum level of welfare.

La biodiversitat, una mesura de la salut del planeta [JOANDOMÈNEC ROS] La biodiversitat, està amenaçada. Aquesta és una de les contundents sentències que l'ecòleg i catedràtic de la Universitat de Barcelona, Dr. Joandomènec Ros, ens mostra al llarg del seu article La biodiversitat, una mesura de la salut del planeta. Per al professor Ros resulta tristament irònic que el coneixement que comencem a tenir de la biodiversitat del planeta i del seu important paper pel funcionament del món, i pels nostres propis afers, arribi en el moment de la història en el que la nostra espècie està agredint aquesta biodiversitat en tots els fronts possibles: destruint hàbitats (especialment les selves tropicals, però també els boscos i les àrees humides i litorals arreu), eliminant directament unes espécies més fràgils i afavorint-ne unes altres (domestiques, plagues, males herbes), contaminant el medi, exhaurint el que per a nosaltres són recursos naturals però per als ecosistemes són peces fonamentals del seu funcionament. Estem arrencant indiscriminadament pàgines senceres d'aquell diccionari del símil, fins i tot abans d'haver-nos preocupat de saber què contenien. I, tot això, en un moment històric en el que la humanitat té problemes greus per alimentar prop de dos terços de la seva població creixent, per no parlar de garantir-los un nivell de benestar mínim.
