This season marks the beginning of a three-year programme to study the diachronic use of the interior space at the monastery of San Andrés de Astigarribia and its surroundings. The monastery appears in records of the XI century (1080-1086), there are a number of caves in its environs which show prehistoric occupation and material remains from the Classical era have also been uncovered within the municipality. The renovation work on the monastery floor provided the opportunity to begin excavating part of the old enclosure, an area partially examined in 1969-70 by I. Barandiarán. The results of the 2000 season point to a funerary use from the Late medieval period to the XIX century, a burial function the methodology of which varied according to the social class of the deceased. The altar structure of the original monastery, previously thought to be XI century, has now been attributed to Late Medieval or Modern chronology.
