The historical-archaeological study of the town of Salinas de Añana is exclusively limited to that area designated as a Zone of Archaeological Interest by the Basque Government, leaving the salt beds aside. The project consisted of the study of the historical evolution of the town, with a detailed analysis of its medieval walls and an exhaustive investigation of all the archives, both from the province of Álava and from the rest of the State, found to contain records of the town. The urban layout was also analysed with a recommendation for each urban site for specific measures of archaeological and architectural protection. Finally, a total of seven archaeological sondages was carried out over this designated area with the aim of finding out about the archaeological potential of the subsoil of the town.
