The future of Christian democracy [JOSEP A. DURAN I LLEIDA] The neoliberalism of today dresses up in pragmatic and postmodern ideology, and instils not only the idea that history is over, but that any political attempt at humanising society and releasing it from the economic coordinates driving it is both naïve and useless. All of we who believe in the principles and values of humanism are deeply affected by this fatalism, not just because some of these liberal approaches have been perversely inoculated into organisations of Christian democrat leanings, but because even beyond that our political conception has always believed in freedom and in the ability of people and the community to build a society founded on values and respect for human dignity, both from the individual and social standpoint, where the person becomes a member of a community that affords him or her meaning and identity. The sad realisation that now, more than ever, the gulf between the first and the third world is widening, and the evidence that there are more poor people than ever and that never before had hunger and misery affected such an important part of humanity, leads us to reflect on our ideological mission and on the results of our political practice, and particularly to wonder about the future of Christian democracy.

El futur de la democràcia cristiana [JOSEP A. DURAN I LLEIDA] El neoliberalisme actual es disfressa d'ideologia pragmàtica i postmoderna, i inculca no només que ja s'ha acabat la història, sinò que qualsevol intent politic per a humanitzar la societat i alliberar-la de les coordenades econòmiques que la dirigeixen és tan il.lús com inútil. A tots els qui creiem en els principia i els valors de l'humanisme, aquest fatalisme ens afecta profundament, no ja només perquè alguns d'aquests plantejaments liberals s'hagin inoculat perversament dintre d'organitzacions de filiació democratacristiana, sinò perquè, encara més enllà, la nostra concepció política sempre ha cregut en la llibertat i en la capacitat de les persones i de la comunitat per a construir una societat fonamentada en els valors i en el respecte de la dignitat humana, tant des d'un vessant individual com també en l'àmbit social, en què la persona es converteix en membre d'una comunitat que el dota de sentit i d'identitat. La trista constatació que ara, més que mai, creixen les diferències entre el primer i el tercer món, i l'evidència que ara hi ha també més pobres que mai i que mai la fam i la miséria no havien afectat una part tan important de la humanitat, tot plegat ens porta a haver de reflexionar a propòsit del nostre missatge ideològic i dels resultats de la nostra practica política, i especialment ens interroga sobre el futur de la democracia cristiana.
