    On nation and nationalism [ANTONI M. ORIOL I JOAN COSTA] This article presents a foretaste of the work of the upcoming publication Nació i nacionalisme. Antologia del Magisteri pontifici contemporani /Nation and nationalism. Anthology of contemporary Pontifical Magisterium], by Antoni M. Oriol, with the collaboration of Joan Costa and Josep R. Carreras de Nadal, in which the authors analyse the contributions of the Pontifical Magisterium in terms of the ideas of nation and nationalism. The first Pope studied in the anthology is Pius XI, on whom seventeen texts are presented, ranging from the Ubi Arcano (23-12-1922) to the Address to the Sacred College of Cardinals (12-12-1938), just before his death. The scope of the article renders it necessary to choose eight of the seventeen texts in question. To summarise, the authors list nine statements, and here we select the seventh and the eighth for their counterpoised nature: 7. «Disorderly nationalism: pastorally, it prevents salvation; ethically it creates barriers; theologically and morally it goes against the laws of God; dogmatically, it contradicts the faith and the Creator». 8. «There is room for a fair, moderated, tempered nationalism associated with all virtues». Using the last statement, A.M. Oriol i J. Costa talk of the virtue of nationalism as a habit of existence and a medium for national life, whose value for all peoples was unmistakably underlines by the great Papa Pius XII. Indeed, referring to national life he states that it is the «right and the honour of a people, and can and must be promoted».

    Sobre nació i nacionalisme [ANTONI M. ORIOL I JOAN COSTA] En aquest article es presenta un primer tast de l'obra de propera publicació Nació i nacionalisme. Antologia del Magisteri pontifici contemporani, a càrrec d'Antoni M. Oriol amb la col¿laboració de Joan Costa i Josep R. Carreras de Nadal, en la qual els autors analitzen les aportacions del Magisteri pontifici pel que fa a les idees de nació i nacionalisme. El primer Papa estudiat en l'antologia és Pius XI, del qual hom presenta disset textos, que abracen des d'Ubi Arcano (23-12-1922) fins al Discurs al Col.legi Cardenalici (1212-1938), molt poc abans de la seva mort. Els límits de l'article obliguen a optar per vuit dels disset textos en qüestió. A tall de síntesi, els autors enuncien nou afirmacions, de les quals seleccionem la setena i vuitena per llur caràcter contrapositiu: 7. «El nacionalisme desordenat: pastoralment impedeix la salvaciò; èticament, suscita barreres; teològico-moralment, contradiu la llei de Déu; dogmàticament, contradiu la fe i el Creador». 8. «Hi ha lloc per a un just, moderat, temperat nacionalisme, associat a totes les virtuts». Cenyint-se a la darrera afirmaciò, A.M. Oriol i J. Costa parlen de la virtut del nacionalisme com a hàbit de vivència i de cultiu de la vida nacional, el valor de la qual per als pobles fou inoblidablement remarcat pel gran Papa Pius XII. En efecte, de la vida nacional afirma també que és «dret i honor d'un poble, i que es pot i deu promoure».
