Lluny ja d'aquells temps prebèl-lics de finals dels anys setanta del segle passat, l'acadèmia sueca l'hi ha atorgat el premi Nobel de la pau de l'any 2002. Jimmy Carter, from `sincere president' overthrown by populism to Nobel Peace prize 2002 [JOAOUÍN LUIS ORTEGA] After many years of work in anonymity, the Democrat Jimmy Carter, who was the 39th president of the United States of America is back in the news. A far cry away from those pre-war times at the end of the seventies in the last Century, the Swedish academy has awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002. Joaquín Luis Ortega, historian, publishing advisor and collaborator of La Vanguardia newspaper, presents the human and personal path of a president who played a prominent role in certain international events, but who was rather naïve in domestic policy. The author shows, using a historical backdrop, how the events that marked the presidency of Jimmy Carter, as well as historical references provide us with food for thought on questions related to the dialogue between citizens and power, level of sincerity we citizens tolerate in the political power we have chosen, or the best communication policy to adopt with voters in times of major crisis. Indeed, the Carter mandate shows us how, apart from political options and administrations, merely getting things right or getting things wrong slowly but inexorably shape international relations.
