    Els limits històrics d'una cultura europea [HENRY KAMEN] Existeix una cultura europea? A partir d'aquesta qüestió Henry Kamen, hispanista, doctor per la Universitat d'Oxford, i autor, entre altres obres, de Felipe de España (1997) i Spain'sRoad to Empire (2002), invita al lector a preguntar-se sobre els limits històrics de la cultura europea. Considera que, en aquests moments, existeix una important confusió entre politica i cultura. Per ell la politica, eix del procés de construcció europea, no genera necessàriament, i d'una manera més o menys immediata, una cultura comú i acceptada per tots els membres de la comunitat. Com afirma al seu article, les divisions politiques sempre han dictat i seguiran dictant la naturalesa de la cultura. L'autor considera que a cada esglaó de la existência histórica del continent europeu, sempre hi ha hagut greus problemes per intentar desenvolupar una identitat cultural. Si, fins i tot al nivell d'estat-nació hi ha hagut problemes fonamentals en l'àmbit cultural, un pot imaginar-se que a l'àrea supranacional del continent europeu les dificultats són, encara, més grans. L'article del Dr. Kamen parla d'aquestes dificultats, reptes i oportunitats de compartir una cultura europea comuna.

    The historic limits of a European culture [HENRY KAMEN] Does a European culture exist? Having put the question, Henry Kamen, Hispanicist, PhD from the University of Oxford, and the author, amongst other works, of Felipe de España (1997) and Spain's Road to Empire (2002), calls upon the reader to reflect on the historical limits of European culture. He holds that at this moment in time there is major confusion between politics and culture. In his opinion, politics, the axis of the building of Europe, does not necessarily generate, more or less immediately, a common culture that is accepted by all the members of the community. As he states in his article, political divisions have always dictated the nature of culture, and will continue to do so. The author considers that at each step in the historical existence of the European continent there have always been serious problems in attempting to develop a cultural identity. If there have always been basic problems in the cultural arena, even at the level of the nation state, then it is not difficult to imagine that difficulties are even greater at in the supranational area of the European continent. The article by Dr. Kamen addresses these difficulties and challenges and the opportunities to share a common European culture.
