    On the centenary of the death of Verdaguer. A brief journey on the death of Verdaguer.

    On the occasion of the centenary of the death of Jacint Verdaguer and the commemoration of the poet, the author performs a brief but intense review of the figure of the most popular poet, writer and subsequent priest in the last three decades of Catalonia in the 19th Century.

    Talking about mossèn Cinto, the poet from Folgueroles, one hundred years after his death, gives rise to an unending source of controversy and questions. Who is the young man who in 1865 turned up at the Jocs Florals (Poetry Contest) sporting a typical Catalan cap and a peasant's girdle? Who is the young man who in 1883 wrote an «Ode to Barcelona», of which the mayor, Rius I Taulet, had one thousand copies issued? Why is he the first writer in modern Catalan who captivated the collective spirit and become part of the collective memory? And what about the conflicts of his figure as a priest with the ecclesiastical hierarchy? Why do critics continually reappraise and extol his work? To understand the scope of the figure of Verdaguer, the author of this brief article addresses the correlation between his controversial biography, the historic setting and of course his literary oeuvres. It is a modest testimonial, but a genuine one, which encourages us to read the poet's work to bring him closer to a new audience, so that he will remain forever in the collective memory.

    En el centaneri de la mort de Verdaguer.

    Breu itinerari per la biografia de mossèn Cinto [JORDI VAN CAMPEN I OBIOLS] En ocasió que, durant l'any 2002, es commemora el centenari de la mort de Jacint Verdaguer, l'autor fa un breu pero intens itinerari sobre la figura del poeta, escriptor, i més tard, mossèn, que més ressò popular va tenir a la Catalunya de l'últim terç del segle XIX.

    Parlar de mossèn Cinto, el poeta de Folgueroles, a cent anys de la seva mort, és una inesgotable font de polêmica que comporta moites preguntes. Qui és el jove que el 1865 es presenta a uns Jocs Florals vestit amb barretina i faixa de pagès? Qui és l'home que el 1883 escriu una «Oda a Barcelona» de la qual l'alcalde Rius i Taulet en fa repartir cent mil exemplars? Per què ès el primer escriptor en llengua catalana moderna que arriba a l'ànima del poble i entra a formar part de la memoria col.lectiva? Quins conflictes manté la seva figura de sacerdot amb la jerarquia eclesiàstica? Per què els critics insisteixen a revaloritzar les seves obres? En aquest breu itinerari per entendre l'abast de la figura verdagueriana, l'autor d'aquest interessant article té en compte la correlació entre la seva polèmica biografia, l'entorn històric i, és clar, la seva producció literària. Aquest és un homenatge modest, pero l'homenatge de veritat passa per llegir el poeta i acostar la seva obra a un públic nou per tal que en perduri la seva memoria.
