  • Resumen
    • This year’s season saw the continuation of the archaeological study of this border fortress in the kingdom of Navarre, focusing on the topographical layout of the site. The analysis of the dilapidated structures of this defensive building, which was besieged and partially destroyed in 1335 by groups of Gipuzkoan border lords, offers sufficient evidence to confirm the existence of two clearly differentiated construction periods over the course of its military occupation, both of which are characterised by a large number of partial repairs. The early medieval phase of the fortress is characterised by a well-organised structure which uses the geographical layout of the area to its advantage, with the aim of achieving a compact perimeter enclosure flanked by three turrets or vantage points and topped by an old tower located to the west of the surviving structure. During the later period, on the other hand, dating from around the middle of the 13th century, the precinct was reconstructed almost in its entirety and accompanied by the building of a new tower and the redistribution of the inner area.
