  • The excavation of Axlor Cave is being carried out within the framework of a project focusing on the transition from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic era in the Basque Countr y, in an attempt to gain further knowledge of the chronology and causes of the appearance of modern humans in Europe and the extinction of the Neanderthals. During 2000 and 2001, a number of levels have been excavated in which Mousterian lithic industr y was discovered; the lower level has been dated at around 41900 BC.
