    • The Impact of Nationalists in European States Position [CARLOS CONDE] The relationship between the European integration process and the national political systems is frequently explained as a top-down process. According to this view, national systems must adapt to the European integration in a deterministic way. However, both political contexts interact in many ways and domestic issues have a deep impact on European processes. The article focuses on this reciprocal determination, paying special attention to the role of national identities in the European integration process. On the one hand, the European Union strengthens the position of nationalist movements in multinational states. On the other hand, the existence of these movements shapes to a large extent the European position of states. In particular, the states with this domestic component are specially favourable to deepen the integration process.
