Controlled language: a useful technique to facilitate machine translation of technical documents

  • Controlled languages ( CL), being attracted by many fields concerned with natural Language processing (NLP), have gained adequate support as well as some criticism. In terms of which aspects and to what extent we can explore or apply this technique is still in debate. However it is certain that using CL techniques can minimize the complexity and ambiguity of natural languages and thus enhance the readability and understanding of texts. It is also the case that CL techniques are very efficient in improving the translation quality of machine translation (MT) or computer-assited translation (CAT). In this article we discuss our practice of controlled language, on how it helps facilitate the feasibility and reliability of our exploitation of machine translation of technical documents, and to be exact, that of the medical protocols applied in the field of zoonosis, a kind of animal disease which can be transferred to humans.
