When talkies first appeared in Spain, they generated heated debate as to whether there could be a new type of dialectic relationship between the written word and the image. At the end of the silent film era, various well-known film critics who had been involved in the debate decided to try their hand at directing films. They sought out young playwrights, one of whom was Enrique Jardiel Poncela, who would thus make his debut as a screenwriter. The aim for progress and renewal in the theater and film meant, on the one hand, a rejection of all things melodramatic, and on the other, intensive use of close-ups, fragmentation of space and sophisticated verbal banter.
