La neurociencia cognitiva, la psicología cognitiva y nuestro sistema cognitivo

    La idea central de este comentario es que, si bien el ser humano tiende a clasificar la realidad poniendo etiquetas a las diferentes categorías semánticas que identifica en el mundo que le rodea, el sistema falla con bastante frecuencia cuando a dicho ser humano se le pide que explicite, de manera clara e inequívoca, tanto el criterio que usa para incluir un objeto dado dentro de una u otra categoría como cuando se le pide que defina una categoría. Sin embargo, el sistema cognitivo es muy eficaz para nuestra supervivencia aún a pesar de esta limitación. Esto mismo podría estar ocurriendo a los neurocientíficos cognitivos, que harían Neurociencia Cognitiva sin saber definir exactamente dicha disciplina ni decir con precisión qué es y qué no es Neurociencia Cognitiva. Esto, no obstante, no supondría un grave problema, ya que los neurocientíficos cognitivos tienen que hacer Neurociencia Cognitiva, siendo la tarea de definir disciplinas científicas más propia de los filósofos de la Ciencia.

    The central idea of this comment is that whereas the human being is able to classify the reality by identifying semantic categories within the surrounding world, the system fails when we ask a human being for the definition of a category, as much as for the criteria to include or exclude a given object within a category. Even though, the system is highly efficient despite this limitation. This might be the situation for cognitive neuroscientists: they are doing Cognitive Neuroscience even if they cannot define this discipline nor decide what is and what is not Cognitive Neuroscience. Nevertheless, this would not be a serious problem, since cognitive neuroscientists must do Cognitive Neuroscience, being philosophers of Science more appropriate for the work of defining a scientific discipline.
