    Between Christianity and Anti-Globalization. The Basque Farmers' Union, ELB. - Emerging from a combination of three factors (Catholicism, an ethnic identity and an occupation), ELB, the Basque branch of the French Peasants' Confederation, has an original interpretation of how the local and global spheres interact. Owing to the conditions of its birth, its activists' itineraries and its structural characteristics, this farmers' union supports anti-globalism even if this means siding with organizations representing heterogeneous interests and identities. From a normative viewpoint, the ELB's position at the junction of several social causes has led it to "globalize" its arguments, evidence of this being its participation in international networks. Locally, ELB has an ambivalent relation with farming institutions in the Basque provinces; it resorts to alternative forms of actions.

    Issu d'une triple matrice, catholique, identitaire et professionnelle, le syndicat paysan ELB, branche basque de la Confédération paysanne, témoigne d'une lecture originale du lien local-global. Les conditions de sa genèse, les itinéraires de ses militants et ses caractéristiques structurelles font de ce syndicat un réceptacle favorable à l'intégration de la dimension altermondialiste, quitte à se retrouver aux côtés d'organisations porteuses d'intérêts et d'identités parfois hétérogènes. D'un point de vue normatif, le positionnement d'ELB au croisement de quatre projets de société a poussé très tôt le syndicat à " mondialiser " son argumentaire. Son insertion dans des réseaux internationaux atteste cette ouverture. À l'échelle locale, ELB entretient un rapport ambivalent avec les arènes et forums liés à l'institutionnalisation de l'agriculture et du territoire basque et recourt à des répertoires d'action alternatifs.
