Analysing the errors found in a corpus of 100 free compositions written in English by Spanish students taking the University Entrance Examination (Valladolid, 1992), there is a group of them which can be explained by the interference of the students' mother tongue's phonetic system. The way, sometimes wrong, Spanish learners of English pronounce the foreign language because of L 1 interference, causes a particular group of grammar mistakes: wrong selection of indefinite article and of demonstrative adjective. It also causes spelling mistakes.
