Mobile TV is already booming on existing cellular infrastructures in unicast mode. However, this mode is not optimized to deliver the same content to many users at the same time, which is preventing mass-market deployment. For massive access to mainstream TV channels via mobile, overlay broadcast networks, complementary to existing cellular networks, are necessary. Alcatel proposes a solution offering unlimited Mobile TV for the mass market. The broadcast part of the solution combines satellite and terrestrial infrastructures, and offers nationwide coverage while operating in a readily available frequency band. The unicast part of the solution will use the existing 3G networks to increase the number of available TV channels, and to propose video-on-demand services (VoD). This article reviews the potential market and usage for Mobile TV, and describes the solution Alcatel is proposing to solve this issue.
