Mar adentro: ¿eu-tanasia? Reflexiones desde una perspectiva enfermera

    Las películas ¿Mar adentro¿ y ¿Million Dollar Baby¿ reavivaron en la opinión pública el debate en torno a la eutanasia. El presente documento utiliza los planteamientos de sus argumentos y los analiza junto con casos de extenso tratamiento informativo como el de Terri Schiavo, para resaltar las claras diferencias entre ellos desde un análisis semántico, comportamental y jurídico.

    Se resalta la trasformación sociodemográfica y cultural que están cambiando la forma de morir, tecnificándola, y trasladando la responsabilidad a los profesionales de la salud sobre dicho momento vital, fundamentalmente sobre el médico, en una secuencia de traslado de responsabilidad de un profesional a otro.

    Se realiza un análisis de la legislación vigente relativa a la toma de decisiones al final de la vida y se proponen argumentos para la defensa y el respeto a morir cuándo y cómo uno quiera, y no cuándo y cómo quieran otros.

    Así mismo, se reflexiona sobre las posibilidades de aportar luz a dichas situaciones de los documentos de instrucciones previas, comparado con la experiencia anterior de otros países, así como el posible papel que el profesional de enfermería podría desempeñar en los mismos.

    Por último, se resalta la necesidad de un profundo cambio cultural que acentúe el respeto a las decisiones de las personas en situación vital irreversible y aparcar realmente las actitudes paternalistas que limitan la capacidad de diálogo entre los profesionales sanitarios y sus interlocutores.

    The films "The sea inside " and " Million dollar baby", both Oscar winners, have revived the public debate about euthanasia. This document present its argument and analyze them along with cases of extensive news coverage, like that of Terri Schiavo, to emphasize the clear differences between them from a semantic, behavioural and legal analysis.

    Sociodemografic and cultural transformations that is changing ways of dying, is emphasised, making it more technical and transferring the responsibility to the health professionals at this vital time, primarily to the doctors, in a sequence of transferral of responsibility from one professional to another.

    An analysis of current legislation relative to the decision making at the end of the life is made, and arguments for the defence of and the respect for the wishes of those who want choose when to die, as opposed to having others choose for them.

    The possibility of bringing light to these situations by means documents from previous instructions compared with previous experiences of others countries, as well as the possible role the nursing professional could carry out in such situations.

    Finally, the necessity of a deep cultural change to pay greater respect to the decisions of terminally ill patients and to really stamp down on the paternalists attitudes that limit the possibility of dialogue between the health professionals and their interlocutors.
