    El mes de agosto de 2004 se celebró en Glasgow el XXX Congreso de la Unión Geográfica Internacional. En este congreso el profesor Adalberto Vallega fue elegido presidente sucediendo a la profesora Anne Buttimer, y se procedió a elegir la sede del XXXII congreso.

    De entre los tres países candidatos (Alemania Chile y China) se eligió a Alemania, y será la ciudad de Colonia la que albergará el congreso internacional de la IGU.dentro de ocho años.

    La presencia española en el congreso continuó la tónica marcada por Seúl con la instalación de un stand informativo de la geografía española. Se distribuyó la publicación La Geografía Española ante los Retos de la Sociedad Actual (Spanish Geography on the Challenges of Contemporary Society, editada por el Comité español de la UGI en la que se recogía el estado de la Geografía Española en sus aspectos académico, investigador y profesional.

    In August 2004, there was celebrated the XXX Congress of the International Geographical Union, in Glasgow. In this congress, Mr Adalberto Vallega was elected president in substitution of teacher Anne Buttimer, and it was proceeded to choose location of the XXXII Congress. Among three countries candidates (Germany, Chile and China) was chosen Germany and will be Cologne (Koln) city that will shelter the international congress of the IGU in eight years. Spanish presence in this Congress continued the keynote marked in Seoul Congress and it was proceeded to the installation of an informative stand of the Spanish geography.The distribution of the book «The Spanish Geography before the Challenges of theCurrent Society (Spanish Geography on the Challenges of Contemporary Society», edited by the Spanish Committee of the UGI in which is analyzed academician state, research and professional status of spanish geography.
