    Partiendo de que la proliferación en Europa de programas de mediación linguística, trabajadores de enlace e intermediación cultural, no va en paralelo con su fundamentación teórica y conceptual, el autor trata de aportar -como primer paso dentro de una serie de ensayos- unos elementos de reflexión sobre la naturaleza y distintividad de la Mediación Intercultural. Entendiéndola como una modalidad más de mediación pero en situaciones y contextos de "multiculturalidad significativa", se pasa revista a cuatro de sus rasgos diferenciadores: la diferenciación etnocultural de las partes involucradas, la incidencia de dicha diferenciación en la relación existente, la relevancia del bagaje cultural del mediador y el objetivo de interculturalidad.

    The development and growth in Europe of linguistic mediation, link-worker and cultural intermediation programmes have not followed the theoretical and conceptual foundations initially established. As a first step in a series of essays, the author aims to provide some food for thought on the nature and distintiveness of Intercultural Mediation. Although it can be understood simply as another form of mediation, it involves situations and contexts of "multicultural significance". The article reviews four of its distinguishing features: the ethnic and cultural differences of the parties involved, the effect of these differences on the existing relationship, the relevance of the mediator's cultural background and the intercultural objective.
