In this paper we pretend to show what the criteria that the Latin Grammarians selected by Keil used to distinguish the preposition as part of sentence are. Five types ofdefinition werefound, which reveal three main cri¬ teria concerning place, semantics and syntax. We relate these criteria to modern definitions of preposition.
