  • Resumen
    • Advances in the identification of plant material of agronomical importance through the use of molecular markers may provide huge quantities of information. This information, if shared at the international level, can add significantly to international efforts for the accurate identification of germplasm, which is a prerequisite to germplasm management and breeding assisted by molecular markers. Vitis vinifera is one of the most important fruit crops. Its cultivars and clones could include as many as 15 000 cultivars. Therefore the use of the most recent advances in information technology, in combination with genetic data, could significantly enhance Vitis vinifera germplasm management world-wide. Here we describe the development of a multimedia web-backed service at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology and Biotechnology of the University of Crete. This service is named the 'Greek Vitis Database',and it provides free access to six databases, gathering information about Greek cultivars of Vitis vinifera: an information database; a nuclear microsatellite profiles database; a chloroplast microsatellite database; a combined nSSR-cpSSR profiles database; an ampelographic database; and a rootstock database. This service, which will be regularly updated with new genetic information, is the first of its kind, where information and descriptive images are combined with microsatellite profiles. In this report the methodology used and the content of the Greek Vitis Database are described.
