Los derrames de petróleo en el Lago de Maracaibo entre 1922 y 1928

    El Zulia es el estado venezolano donde la explotación petrolera se inició a gran escala con el reventón del pozo Barroso Nº 2 (1922). El impacto fue repentino y directo en la afectación de la vida económica, social y cultural en los territorios del puerto-ciudad de Maracaibo. El ecosistema del lago fue afectado junto con otras fuentes de agua alrededor de las cuales se había consolidado el circuito agro exportador, y del cual dependían formas de vida cotidiana.

    Estas materias se plantean en este artículo, empezando con los informes presentados ante la autoridad por las comunidades afectadas, las respuestas recibidas, tanto de las autoridades como de las compañías petroleras; igualmente se plantea la forma cómo esta problemática era tratada por intelectuales, poetas, literatos y periodistas de la época. Este estudio es un avance de un proyecto de investigación más amplio y que incluye otros elementos, tales como la lengua, costumbres, tradiciones, cosmos-visión, apertura a la paz y otros.

    Zulia, having been the state where oil explotation on a large scale began in Venezuela starting from 1922 with the outburst of the Barroso Nº 2 oil well, received the impact of this activity in a suddenly and direct manner� affecting the economical, social and cultural life of the territories from where the new source of the national economy was extracted, like the port-city of Maracaibo. The lake ecosystem was primarily affected along with other sources of water around which the agro-exporting circuit had consolidated and from whom the lifestyle and the daily routine depended on; such matters are dealt with in this paper, starting from the reports presented by the affected community before the authorities, the replies the affected received from these authorities and the oil companies, and how this problematic was recollected by the intellectuals of that period through their poetry, literature and journalistic work. This study represents the preview of a larger research project with a wider scope of other elements also affected with that process such as language, fashion, traditions, cosmos-vision, breach of the peace, among others.
