Hyperlinks are the most commonly used attributes to study web sites and structures on the web. In this paper, we analyze and compare hyperlink networks using a variety of linking units on different levels of aggregation and specificity. Focusing on the scientific web, we selected the following linking units: countries, universities, departments and individuals. This paper discusses whether and how the heterogeneous linking patterns might provide information about knowledge production and its context.
