I believe the title on a piece of work is important. Whether it is a painting, book, play, dance, movie, or dissertation, the title constitutes a creative act on the part of its producer. The title is especially important on a "scholarly" presentation.
Last summer I used "The Art of Everything" as the theme for a one week intensive workshop for educators. And when offered the opportunity to present the 2005 Sargent Lecture, I decided to use it again. However, as I examined what it is I really want to say in this lecture, I questioned whether I really mean the art of everything rather than the art in everything. After some painful grappling and middle of the night musing, I decided fi nally that I really do mean the art of everything.
