  Este trabajo tiene como objetivo ofrecer un repaso de la vida de la fundadora de la enfermería profesional y del contexto histórico-sociocultural en el cual se desarrolló. Florence Nightingale era la primera teórica de enfermería, supo aplicar sus conocimientos de historia y filosofía al estudio de la realidad, en particular a esa parte de la realidad que se constituyó en el centro de su vida: el cuidado de la salud de las personas. Para comprender el curso de su vida hay que recordar que le correspondió vivir en un país que había iniciado la transformación de las relaciones sociales de producción, y distribución de los bienes materiales y espirituales. Como consecuencia de la Revolución Industrial, apareció una nueva clase social, la burguesía, que transformaría no sólo las condiciones de vida material de los hombres sino también el pensamiento. Del dogmatismo católico se pasó a la reforma religiosa, dando surgimiento, en el caso de Inglaterra, al anglicanismo como religión oficial, y a otras corrientes del protestantismo.

  This paper aims to review the life of the founder of professional nursing and the historical, social and cultural context in which it developed. Florence Nightingale, the first nursing theorist, applied her knowledge of history and philosophy to the study of reality, by focusing on what became the centre of her life: people's health care. To understand her life it is necessary to remember the situation of a country that had just started the deep transformation of the social relations of production and distribution of material and spiritual goods. As a consequence of the Industrial Revolution, a new social class appeared, the bourgeoisie, transforming not only material standards of living but also thought. Catholic dogmatism turned into religious reform, giving way, in regards to England, to the establishment of Anglicanism as the official religion and to other Protestant currents.
