    Nuestro propósito al realizar este estudio fue extender la investigación sobre la ayuda que los/as hermanos/as de niños/as con retraso mental dan a sus hermanos y hermanas para incluir no sólo el cuidado, sino también otras formas de conducta de ayuda, como el apoyo emocional, la ayuda tangible, y la información. Comparamos a 100 hermanos/as (50 con y 50 sin un hermano o hermana con retraso mental) en términos de su conducta de ayuda percibida. Los/as hermanos/as de niños y niñas con retraso mental se implicaban en niveles mayores de apoyo emocional percibido y cuidado pero no en información o ayuda tangible. El cuidado básico percibido y el apoyo emocional se asociaron con el género, la necesidad de asistencia del/de la niño/a, y la autoestima

    Our purpose for conducting this investigation was to extend the research on the help that siblings of children with mental retardation give to their brothers and sisters to include not only custodial care, but also other forms of helping behavior, such as emotional support, tangible aid, and information giving. We compared 100 siblings (50 with and 50 without a brother or sister with mental retardation) in terms of their perceived helping behavior. Siblings of brothers and sisters with mental retardation engaged in higher levels of perceived emotional support and custodial care but not information giving or tangible aid. Perceived custodial care and emotional support were associated with gender, the child's need for assistance, and self-esteem.
