  • This article analyzes both of Pardo Bazán’s essays, taking into consideration how her discussion of film evolves over the twelve years that separate the two essays. It is quite surprising to find that Emilia Pardo Bazán, who so strongly advocated the realist novel, and proclaimed her preference for films that showed reality, directed her attention to melodramatic fiction films.

    More surprising yet is to discover that in her second article, her only objection focuses on the lack of national perspective both in subject matter and in the intertitles
