Black women interpret Carmen in two American adaptations of the well-known myth: Carmen Jones (1954) by Otto Preminger and Carmen: a Hip Hopera (2001) by Robert Townsend. This article analyzes the displacement that occurs when a ‘Spanish’ myth is transposed into another culture. How is a Black American Carmen brought to life on the screen? And how should we read the Spanish symbols transformed in these films into jazz music and rap?
