  • Resumen
    • In its exploration of the Carmen story, this essay concentrates on The Loves of Carmen (Charles Vidor, 1948). It considers the performance and star meanings of one of the most iconic of Hollywood stars, Rita Hayworth, taking account of the ways in which her on and off screen life plays into her role as Carmen.

Questions of national and personal identity are raised through discussion of the process of ‘Americanization’ that characterised the star’s transformation from Margarita Cansino to ‘Rita Hayworth’. The essay concludes with an analysis of ‘Rita Hayworth’/Carmen through attention to theories of mimicry and masquerade
