This article analyzes how Dolores del Rio’s great success in Hollywood was due in large part to her producer, Edwin Carewe, who transformed her into a female version of Rudolph Valentino. Her exotic appearance, dark complexion and eroticism fused perfectly with the myth of Carmen and were exploited to the full in Walsh’s 1927 film The Loves of Carmen.
