As happened in other countries, in Spain there were numerous fires caused by the high degree of inflammability of nitrate film. In the early decades of the century, there were many fires, close calls, and false alarms, which resulted in the loss of poorly constructed theaters, and worse, the loss of human lives. When the Hispano Films laboratory and studios in Barcelona burned down in June of 1918, film negatives and copies were lost. The worst case of material being lost occurred after the Spanish Civil War, when successive fires were produced in the three principle abstract film laboratories in Madrid: Riera, Arroyo, and Madrid Film.
