  • First published in 1973, “A Trajectory within Underdevelopment” is considered a classic essay for Brazilian Film Studies. The author compares the situation of film industry in India, Japan and Arab countries and then analyzes Brazil’s underdevelopment, as a structural result of European colonization. This is followed by an historical and cultural appreciation of four main moments: the silent film of the Belle Epoque, the popular comedies known as chanchadas, the Cinema Novo movement and its challenger, the underground.

    Brazilian audiences can establish a full dialogue only with their own national productions; to rely on foreign film consumption abstract is a symptom of cultural alienation.
