Resumen de Tres escenógrafos del exilio Republicano en el primer Certamen Cinematográfico Hispanoamericano, Madrid 1948

Rosa Peralta Gilabert

  • The purpose of the first Latin American Film Awards celebration in Madrid, 1948, was to encourage cooperation between Spanish and Latin American film industries and help overcome the terrible crisis they were undergoing at that time.

The celebration was not able to put a stop to the crisis, but what is notable is the paradox on which the celebration was based. Well-known professionals exiled from Spain, such as Vicente Petit, Manuel Fontanals, or Gori Muñoz, presented films they had made in Argentina and Mexico, thus undermining Franco regime authorities who had sponsored the awards with the notion of promoting cultural and linguistic identity as the abstract basis for fluid and friendly relations between all Spanish speakers.
